Analysis of Sound - Rob
Analysis of sound
(TV - Eastenders);
The TV program I have chose to analyze the sound of is, the soap opera EastEnders.
I have chosen to use this program as it is very popular and the use of sound is good.
Soap operas don’t use non-diegetic sound as they are described as being realistic, and by using sound that’s not actually seen in the show, it will not portray realism which is what soaps do.
Soap operas use sound variously through the opening theme and through things in the scene such as cars, people walking pass, doors closing etc.
In soap operas, they use sound for specific things, for example, when something dramatic has happened like a big storyline has been revealed or a character has died,everything will be silent, but then you'd just hear a clock ticking, or a phone beeping. Soaps have specifically used sound to make it more intense.
Also, the use of sound in a soap would be the opening theme. Each soap has its own original theme tune and intro that is only linked to that soap. It would rarely have any words on it, just an instrumental and moving images that represent the characters. The purpose of using sound specifically at the start of a soap is to let the audience know instantly what soap they are watching just by recognizing the theme tune.
(Radio - Capital FM)
With any radio station, they use a lot of diegetic sound as they are playing music, the song will start off and end with sounds such as gunshots, beeping, instrumentals which slowly start the tune off.
They will also have diegetic sounds from the adverts that are being played after a song is finished or while the presenters are taking a break.
Non-diegetic sound would be used from things such as adverts that are used to promote other things but are also linked to the radio station.
The use of sound can be used for various things when it comes to a radio station. If it is a radio where they have interviews with people or even have people calling in that talk about things such as dilemmas, sound can be used to let the audience know when a caller has finished speaking or a new person is going to be interviewed etc.
Radio itself is sound as its all to do with verbal things such as music and interviews, to films.
